Echoes of Us

The Process:

Each elder that takes part in this project will be honoured through a multifaceted tribute: a painted portrait, a photograph, and an original song composed from in-depth, heart-led interviews. These aren’t just artistic representations — they are time capsules of lived wisdom, emotion, and presence. The elders’ voices, reflections, and life stories will be captured with care, ensuring their legacy speaks directly to the generations to come.

The Vision:

Echoes of Us is a timely project at the intersection of art, music, and memory — honouring our elders through intimate portraiture and original songs written from their stories. As artificial intelligence approaches ubiquity in our daily lives, this multidisciplinary art installation will urge us to pause and listen — truly listen — to the wisdom and lived experience of our aging population before their stories are digitized, diluted, or lost.

Youth will be invited to assist in the interview and creative process, helping to reshape the narrative around aging—from “senior citizen” to “elder” and “mentor.” By fostering dialogue across generations, we will create a bridge of empathy, learning, and legacy. Youth will help shape the interview questions, bringing fresh curiosity and relevance. Their participation ensures this project is not only a tribute to the past, but a conversation with the future.

The Installation:

The final installation will be a large-scale 30x40 gallery canvas, where each portrait is seamlessly interwoven into one collective tapestry. Embedded with discreet magnetic technology, the piece will offer a hidden layer of interactivity — a surprise for in-person viewers. As guests approach, a soundscape gently unfolds: original music, composed from each elder’s essence, and powerful fragments of their own voices — offering a living, breathing archive of what it meant to be human before the singularity; before technology began to replace the voices we once turned to for wisdom.

The Rationale:

In a world rushing toward artificial intelligence in every home, this project stops time. It honours our elders—our living libraries—through hand-painted portraits and original music that emerges from real conversations. Every story captured is a thread in the tapestry of who we are. Like the skies before satellites—quiet, whole, and full of stars—we are losing our pre-AI elders. With them go languages unrecorded, wisdom unarchived, memories unpassed. This project is a time capsule and a tribute. A reverent pause before the noise. It honours connection over convenience. Memory over machinery. The human voice, before the algorithm replaces the echo.
